What are the Benefits of Breastfeeding?

Oct 1, 2021

New mom with lactation specialist and newborn babyWithout question, breastfeeding is good for your baby and for you! Here are some of the primary benefits for you both:

For your baby:

  • Breast milk is easier for your baby to digest and contains antibodies that help your baby fight off viruses and bacteria
  • Lowers your baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies
  • Babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first six months of life have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and gastrointestinal issues
  • Offers all the calories, nutrients and fluids your baby needs to grow and develop
  • May help to protect against obesity, diabetes, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), asthma, eczema, colitis, and some cancers

For new moms:

  • Returns your uterus to the size it was before pregnancy more quickly
  • Helps you burn more calories, which may help you lose the weight you gained during pregnancy
  • Delays the return of your menstrual period which keeps iron in your body
  • Provides natural contraception within the first six months after birth, if:
    • You are exclusively breastfeeding
    • Your period has not returned
  • Reduces the risk of ovarian cancer and breast cancer
  • Keeps your bones strong
