Warmer weather in Central Oregon means more opportunities for water play in lakes, rivers, oceans and swimming pools. But water can also be dangerous at any time of year. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for young children, and water-related accidents can happen quickly and quietly—at home as well as outdoors. Follow these safety tips to ensure you and your family remain safe while enjoying water activities.
Watch Children Closely Around Water
Always keep your eyes on kids when they are in or near water. Stay within arm’s reach for young children. Do not get distracted by phones, reading or conversations, even if a lifeguard is on duty. Active supervision is one of the most important ways to prevent drowning.
Put a Fence Around Pools
Home pools should be contained by a fence with a self-closing, self-latching gate. Pool fences help keep children out of the water when no adult is watching.
Never Swim Alone
Use the buddy system when swimming. Children and adults should always swim with another person nearby who can call for help or emergency assistance, if needed. Even strong swimmers can experience cramps, exhaustion or emergencies in the water.
Do Not Use Alcohol or Drugs During Water Activities
Alcohol and drugs affect judgement, coordination, balance and reaction time. Avoid intoxicating substances while swimming, boating or supervising children around water.
Stay Safe in Lakes, Rivers and Oceans
Natural bodies of water can be hard to predict and may contain hidden dangers such as:
• Strong currents
• Waves
• Sudden drop-offs
• Rocks or debris
Some lakes and ponds may contain harmful algae blooms, also called cyanotoxins. The water may look green, blue or like paint floating on the surface. It may smell bad. Do not swim, drink or let pets play in this water. If you come into contact with harmful algae, rinse off with clean water as soon as possible.
Wear a Life Jacket
Life jackets help people stay afloat and reduce the risk of drowning. Wear a properly fitted life jacket when boating or participating in water sports.
Children and adults should wear life jackets, even if they are strong swimmers.
Never Leave Children Under 5 Alone in the Bath
Babies, toddlers, and young children can drown in just a few inches of water. Never leave a child under age 5 alone in a bathtub. Continue to keep a close watch on children over that age, depending on their developmental maturity.
If you need to leave the room, take the child with you.
Learn CPR
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives during a water emergency. Immediate CPR can improve outcomes while waiting for emergency responders.
Consider taking a CPR and first aid class to prepare for emergencies.
Protect Your Family With Simple Water Safety Habits
Water safety starts with awareness and preparation. By supervising children closely, using life jackets, avoiding distractions, staying informed and making smart choices around water, you can help prevent drowning and keep your family safe.
